  • Why/How is the Ecosystem Restoration Design course different from a free online MOOC course?

This course is different because it covers a much broader number of topics (16 in total), and involves 16 teachers, rather than one or two. We do not have the resources to invest in creating this course without it being something people pay for, and we could not have gotten buy in from the teachers without paying them for their time.

  • How much more depth does this course offer? Is there a theoretical/academic framework used? If so, which one; why this one?

You learn the basics of a broad range of ecosystem restoration/regenerative agriculture techniques. Each lesson teaches you a range of techniques that that particular teacher has used in their own restoration project. There is then a host of additional learning materials that you can delve into if you want to go more in-depth.

  • How much more personal attention is provided to participants? Does that mean that I need to be available at certain time slots? Or can I still manage my time as flexibly as with a free online course?

There is a facilitator with you that supports you through the course. The course takes 6 months to complete, with one module lasting one month, and each lesson (4 per month), each week. Each lesson lasts an hour, and then whatever time you want to spend on doing the extra reading. Module 1 will run from 15 May – 25 June, M2, 20 June – 20 July, M3, 25 July – 25 August, M4, 30 July – 30 August, and M5 – 5 September – 5 November 2020.

  • Why is this knowledge not offered for free?

The answer is very simple. Building and giving such a course is not free. The organisations behind the course need to pay the rent, pay the salaries of the people that work for them, and pay for the technology being used. The fee covers those costs and feeds into the development of new courses by Gaia Education and Ecosystem Restoration Camps. However, we realise that some people who could well be served by having access to this knowledge cannot afford the price. Ecosystem Restoration Camps will set up a scholarship fund from the proceeds of this course to help people in badly degraded areas and living in poor circumstances to take the course. More information can soon be found on the Ecosystem Restoration Camps website.

  • Where do my finances go to? (I can imagine that many potential participants would like to spend a little more on their own personal development if that eventually also benefits organisations like ERC and Gaia Education/boosts their initiatives, etc. I can also imagine that many who can afford the payment would with that like to support others who cannot)

Your finances go to paying the course teachers for their time and expertise, and then once they’ve been paid, directly to the movement to support the camps with what they need. The true value of the course is that you get to learn from the world’s best ecosystem restoration practitioners, direct from their personal experiences of restoring every single type of landscape there is.
