What do we do about education?
As our young people become increasingly necessarily radicalised, what can we do about an educational system that has failed us, and will continue to do so?
Beyond basic education, ensuring people have the fundamental tools to live in a complex world- literacy numeracy, critical thinking, skills etc, what is it we are educating people for? and How?
A small group of us embarked on this question, and realised a framework to ensure we embed the competencies individuals need to navigate and thrive in an increasingly complex and uncertain world; a world which for the most part does not yet exist, and which is largely uncertain. We also developed an evaluation framework for what we called the ‘key compenencies’ for Education for Sustainable Development.
This webinar will be a chance to peer into the complexity of a world that does not yet exist and glimpse into the possibility of equipping ourselves for this world. You will be challenged to look beyond your’ knowns’ to the unknowable unknowns. We will also share some of our findings about how we have applied education for unknowable unknown to educational settings, and how, in turn, we can start to evaluate whether specific educational settings are enabling learners to acquire these key competencies.
Co-founder of Transition Town Totnes, the first Transition Town, and of Transition Training, Naresh Giangrande has been involved in designing, running and evolving many of the events, groups, and trainings that have been at the heart of the enormously successful Transition Towns movement. As one of the initiators, he has delivered hundreds of Transition Trainings to thousands of participants in twenty countries that has lead to a local project in South West England becoming a world wide movement in over 50 countries.He has also delivered hundreds of talks and interviews on issues relating to Transition and regenerative culture.
He co-designed and co-facilitated the first Deep Adaptation Deep Dive in December 2018, is part of a group who are exploring what ‘Deep Adaptation’ means both personally and as a society.
He is currently working with Gaia Education developing a framework for Education as part of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Before the Transition movement took over his life he lived and worked in an eco community, was Managing Director of a landscape company, and a gaffer in the film industry, as well as teaching meditation.
He is painfully aware of the preciousness of life, developing his capacity for love, and acceptance of his own mortality. He is father to two lovely daughters and two equally lovely grandchildren.
