Courage Chocolate

Courage Chocolate is the outcome of the Herbal Youth Project which builds the capacity of young women migrants arriving in a region with the richest concentrations of biodiversity in Europe in terms of medicinal and aromatic herbs. The regenerative project combines the wild herbs of the Iblei territory with the traditional art of chocolate making of Sicily with a view of opening opportunities for the young women in organic herbal chocolate making.

Courage Chocolate is the outcome of many months of capacity development of the young women in Mediterranean herb identification and chocolate making from tree to bar, including the transformation of the cacao beans into liquor, butter, powder and chocolate. With the mentoring support of the Sicilian master baker, the young women have developed their recipes and created the line of Courage chocolate in different combinations.
Courage Chocolate has been awarded the Milano Prize in 2019 and was sold out during LUSH Manchester Festival.

The jury of experts at TuttoFood 2019 recognized that the project ‘fully expresses the idea of responsibility as inclusion’, based on the ‘observation of the context and on the creation of a complex chain in which, starting from a situation of hardship, it was possible to achieve opportunities for growth and success’.
