The Common Core constitutes the shared scientific, methodological, and ethical foundation for all Masters and Bachelor Programs at JUA University. It serves as an introduction for students to the strategic understanding of a holistic approach to territorial development. It draws inspiration from the curricula of Gaia Education and the Global Ecovillage Network.
The certified Ecovillage Design Education (EDE) program forms the core of the Common Core curriculum at JUA University. In a national context marked by multidimensional poverty—where education has had limited impact on economic, social, ecological, and cultural development—JUA University trains students and deploys them in villages to work on local solutions and to stimulate structured dynamics for sustainable development and climate change adaptation.
The main session will take place at the Kisantu Botanical Garden site, complemented by staggered sessions and immersive field experiences in villages.
The program aims to enable students to understand the dimensions of holistic development in an integrated and holographic manner.
Program Structure – “Wheel of Regeneration”
Duration: 125 hours of instruction over 4 weeks.
The curriculum is structured around the mandala wheel's themes: each week is dedicated to one dimension.
Systemic design tools serve to unify the curriculum and connect the elements of the four dimensions with one another and with real-world contexts. The teaching approach will combine an understanding of the indicators of the 4 dimensions, while also considering their systemic interpenetration.
How to run an EDE?
Several of our EDE graduates have carried on organising EDE programmes in their local areas, and you are warmly encouraged to do so after completing your course.
The recommended time frame of an EDE is four weeks, however this is not fixed and varies with each individual programme.
The material can be condensed into smaller workshops, spread out over a longer period, or distributed in blocks at different times and locations.
