Ecovillage Design Education programmes, often referred to as ‘EDEs’, provide participants of all ages with the knowledge and practical skills to design communities, projects and organisations with stronger social systems, greater efficiency and healthier environments.

The EDE course equips you with skills and knowledge you will be able to put into action in any field or sector you are involved with. It also connects you to a global network of change agents and sustainability designers. These individuals are taking an active role in transitioning their existing communities, institutions, and neighborhoods, while also leading more joyful and meaningful lives.

For many people, it is not possible to take time off from work/family/school for a four-week immersive EDE programme. Our new mini-EDEs offer the possibility of experiencing the taste of a full EDE, maintaining the core values and following the  4D Framework, but in a shorter version.

The course is based on the four core dimensions of Gaia Education’s Ecovillage Design Curriculum: the Social, Worldview, Ecological and Economic dimensions of sustainability. The Curriculum was developed drawing on the experience developed throughout a network of some of the most successful ecovillages and transition settings around the world.

During the Mini-EDE GEN-Japan we will dive into each of the core dimensions for one day, led by experienced facilitators in their fields and special guests.

GENNA

GEN-Japan has held certified EDE programs since 2017.
From March - April 2026, each session of GEN-Japan Mini EDE runs for three nights and four days per month. The appeal for participants is in staying at two dynamic sites while learning directly from 12 authorities about 4 dimensions.
The first sessions take place in an urban ecovillage, the Azone Suzuka Community. The third one is held at the “Small Earth Project” site near Tokyo ; that involves preserving traditional terraced rice fields through partnerships with students and companies from Tokyo.

Another defining feature of the program is to learn practically relationship-building by “the mutual listening dialogue.” Running sustainable initiatives requires its communication platform, where anything can be talked openly and relaxingly among members. Participants will also appreciate the three-week period between each three-night, four-day monthly retreat, allowing them to apply what they learned in sessions to review and reform their own sites or workplaces.
